How to protect from thieves while travelling

In the abroad countries tourists get robbed most often. Luggages and other valuable things kept in the pockets are stolen most commonly. The methods of the thieves are old as the whole world, however they are constantly improved. The policemen of Stockholm, who commented the news about the stirring activity of pickpocketers in the Sweden’s capital and provided useful advices, which are important while traveling in any country.

How to avoid theft:

* Keep the bag, where the money is, in front of you, holding it with your hand.
* Don’t keep your wallet in the back pocket or bag. The best place for it is front pockets near your body.
* Don’t keep your wallet or mobile phone in unpinned pockets and bags.
* While using ATM’s always look around, hide the keyboard, display and the money with your body, and make sure that there is certain distance with other people from your back and sides.
* Don’t carry much cash with you and other things, like documents or tickets, which you won’t need at the moment.
* Be alert when you are approached by several people, who ask questions, unintentionally push you or spill something on your clothes or things.
* Don’t let unfamiliar people carry your baggage, where are your valuable things.

In the airport:

* Don’t put bags with valuable things at the top of the baggage trolley.
* Keep money, jewels and documents near your body, for example, on wallet, which could be hung on your neck or in the inside pockets of your jacket, which are pinned with buttons and zippers.
* If you, however, got rifled, scream as loud as you can, so that the people nearby and the security officers would react quickly.

The most popular thief methods:
* Thefts from vehicles – someone knocks on the window from one side and asks for something or shows a fake problem which has happened to his car. In the meantime his mate silently opens the door from the other side and grabs anything what is valuable from the seat or compartment box and runs away. If you change the tire yourself or leave it in the petrol station – lock the car.

* Greasing the victim of the crime – here participates several “actors”. The objective is to grease the clothes or baggage with tea or coffee, or any other greasing material. Further the thieves try to apologize and clean the victim in many ways. The movement of their hands is impossible to follow. Wallets, watches and purses vanish together with the stains.

* Things on the ground – thieves drop certain valuable thing, like wallet, in a well seen place, just before the nose of the victim. The objective: to distract the victim from its luggage. As often as not tourists try to chase the loser and inform him that he lost something, however, such attentive tourists don’t even suspect that they also lose something at the same moment.

* Help with the luggage – the stranger offers its help to carry the luggage. Sometimes he doesn’t even wait for the reaction of the tourist and grabs the most valuable looking trunk or a bag with the purchases, or the theft occurs when the owner of the luggage diverts his attention.

* Pushing the victim – the criminal pushes its victim in the crowd, passage or escalator. The theft succeeds best when the victim holds another person while falling and has to apologize him. In the meantime valuable things disappear from the pockets and bags.
